The case for a trial for would-be bomber
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jan. 13, 2010 11:15 pm
The Jan. 10 column by Charles Krauthammer, titled “Obama's obsession with closing Guantanamo,” argues that the alleged Christmas Day would-be bomber and others like him should not have the right to a trial by jury. Presumably, such people would end up in Guantanamo, where they would be neither charged with a crime nor given rights afforded by the Geneva Convention.
In that case, perhaps Mr. Krauthammer should be informed that it was Thomas Jefferson who stated, “I consider trial by jury as the only anchor yet imagined by man by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution.” Perhaps Mr. Krauthammer knows something that Mr. Jefferson did not?
