The Johnson County United Nations Association would like to thank the 27 businesses, UI groups, and nongovernmental organizations that were sponsors, and the 25 generous individual sponsors who made the annual Night of 1,000 Dinners successful again this year.
Each year, this occasion celebrates International Women’s Day. This year’s record proceeds will be distributed to four local women-led organizations whose work was honored: the Healthy Kids Clinic, the Youth Stabilization Program, the Emma Goldman Clinic, and Four C’s, as well as to UNICEF. A theme for the evening was the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3, “Health and Well-Being.”
Thanks to the city councils of Iowa City and North Liberty for sponsorships, and to Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, and the Johnson County Board of Supervisors for signing proclamations recognizing March 8 as International Women’s Day and March as Women’s History Month. Appreciation is also due to The Gazette and to KICI radio for publicizing this event.
Thanks to our special guest, Ambassador Michele Sison, a career ambassador and currently Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, who came from Washington, DC. She spoke about how her team works to support American interests around the world while working with partners through multilateral institutions like the U.N.
Additionally, of course, all 230 people who attended contributed to making this truly a community event. Iowans know how to collaborate to accomplish good things, support worthwhile organizations, and have a good time at the same time.
