Tell the truth about monocrop agriculture
The Gazette Opinion Staff
May. 4, 2011 12:26 pm
Why don't you tell the truth about monocrop agriculture? Since the 1950s, the average corn yield has about tripled. The average organic matter in the soil on my dad's original farm has more than doubled. The average fertility of soil has almost tripled. The soil lost per acre has been cut by two-thirds while growing three times the corn.
They might be right about the sustainability of tripling the corn yield every 50 years. But if the farmers listened to their environmentalist ideas 50 years ago, guess how much the price of corn might be today?
