Teaching ‘objects and principles’ is easy if you know where to find them

The Iowa Legislature is considering a bill to require the singing of the national anthem every morning. As a former semiprofessional singer let me assure you that this song is not easy to sing and the cacophony every morning might send some teachers to early retirement. Also under consideration is the "instruction of the objects and principles of the United States Government. This is easy beyond peradventure: the Preamble to the Constitution clearly states the object and principle of the United States Government — you can look it up. The purpose is to provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, establish justice and ensure domestic tranquility.
