Taxpayers should be able to track money
The Gazette Opinion Staff

Why is county and city reporting data in the newspaper so hard to read? To simply list the city and county check register is archaic and not at all informative. It shows no effort to engage public scrutiny, let alone be transparent. Here we are in an age when there are iPhone apps to track a household's buying habits but there is nothing to track how many tax dollars go into supporting the pensions of government retirees or which companies benefit most from local connections.
At the local level, we have no clue how the ever-rising taxes and fees we must pay are really allocated.
Taxpayers must learn how to regain control of our local governments' expenditures or lose our right to do so.
