Taxpayers get money’s worth from school

While the Mound View neighborhood was not leveled by the flooded Cedar River in 2008, if you drive down First Avenue, you know there is plenty of work to be done. Homes either torn down or snatched up by speculators hoping to make a pretty penny when they sell off to the next college or business expansion.
I have lived in this neighborhood for four years and love it! My neighbors are wonderful. Even the police officer at our neighborhood association meeting told us a Gazette article about crime around Polk was misleading. Our neighborhood is one of the safest in town.
Polk school is extraordinary in every way. It is not only about where we are - one of the few schools off the No child Left Behind list - it is where we have come from.
In the past four years, the school has made incredible strives in narrowing the achievement gap. With 90 percent of our student body receiving either free or reduced lunch, every taxpayer should be paying attention. Your money is hard at work! Why waste this momentum?
In Mound View we may not have a lot of money, power or connections. But everyone has come together to support our kids and the staff at Polk. Now we will see if our voices can be heard.
