Tattered and unlit flags are a disgrace
The Gazette Opinion Staff

In driving from one place to another in Cedar Rapids and Hiawatha day or night, I am appalled at the lack of respect for our American flag.
I see flags so tattered they are barely recognizable. I see many flying at night without being illuminated. If you put your flag up at dawn and do not have any way of lighting it at night, you need to take it down at dusk.
For flags so tattered and worn, please replace and dispose of them properly. Proper disposal would be to give your flag to your local government or American Legion Post.
Everyone should respect our flag, our country and all those who serve or have served to protect her.
