Tama County casino would harm Meskwaki’s
The Gazette Opinion Staff

We have no casinos in Hardin County, so the only gambling we do here is in other counties.
I can't believe that the state is seriously considering a state-run casino in Tama County. This would undoubtedly hurt the Meskwaki casino on its settlement.
Have we learned nothing about the American Indians, who used to call the very ground we stand on their home? May I remind you of the Trail of Tears and the almost innumerable treaties and promises that were broken?
The genocide and the ethnic cleansing we practiced should surely color our decisions in a way that protects the few who survived that awful time.
