Take time to thank those who served
The Gazette Opinion Staff

As a retired veteran I thank Heritage Christian School for recognizing veterans of all branches of the armed forces. I also thank Central City for the invitation to its school, but was unable to attend. I want to thank all the businesses who sponsored veterans meals to show their support.
I especially want to thank Principal Michael Annis for his comments at the school's presentation and feel they should be echoed by others. He said “that patriotism is not something you are born with, but it has to be taught.” If you asked students what the eleventh hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month meant, or asked what war was supposed to be “the war to end war,” how many would know?
Some schools/parents are teaching their students/children what it is to be patriotic, but too many are ignoring what it cost others to allow them to have their freedom.
Annis stated that he wanted his students to meet and thank those who served and sacrificed so much for their freedom. Even though it may not be Veterans Day, take the time and thank veterans for their service and for your freedom. Your kind words and gesture will make a difference in a veteran's day.
