Take interest before bad ideas become law

Probably to most people, politics is boring. I know it was to me back in the early 1960s when our five children were all younger than 5 1/2 years of age. Then someone came up with the idea of drafting girls into the military. We had four girls. Politics was touching home.

Since then, I've spoken my opinion about ideas coming from our elected leaders. Because those ideas touch home, for someone.

As I remember, our girls liked playing with dolls and our son couldn't have toy guns that looked real enough for him. Oh, some say it's a taught thing, that there isn't really a basic difference in the choices the sexes would make if left on their own. Everyone can have their opinion; mine is that it is in their DNA.

It also is in the DNA of politicians to push laws that benefit themselves. And if we citizens pay no attention to what's being pushed, we lose much of the time.

When the idea of drafting girls was initiated our children were very little, but once a bad idea becomes law, it is most difficult to remove it from the books and it would have eventually affected them. A voluntary thing is far different from being forced to go completely against one's nature; that's devastating.

Laws are like straitjackets - we can't get out of them. We need to take an interest before ideas become law. Bad laws will always put someone on the losing end.
