As a former television journalist, I’m watching Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District race with great interest. Liz Mathis and her opponent became household names as local news anchors, which catapulted them to other careers. But that’s where the comparison ends.
Liz Mathis was much more than just a polished news reader. She was a guiding force in Eastern Iowa news for more than 25 years. She was a writer, reporter and editor, who consistently explained complex stories clearly and precisely — often under strict deadlines. Along the way, she mentored dozens of young journalists and assumed numerous volunteer leadership roles in the community. Most important, Liz always put her personal feelings aside, in order to gather and deliver the best and most accurate information to Eastern Iowans.
Since her TV days, Liz has transitioned into successful careers in higher education, nonprofit management and public service. She has worked to find consensus in the classroom, the boardroom and the break room. But her fundamental training as a journalist has never wavered. She still is an honest, articulate, open minded and compassionate communicator, who has the best interests of Iowans at heart.
Many people have quizzed me recently about my opinion in this race. The answer is easy. Liz Mathis has the experience, credibility, compassion and reputation to represent us well in Congress. She is Iowa at its best.
I’m proud to support Liz Mathis for Congress.
