Stop student sprawl in I.C. neighborhoods
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 25, 2012 11:58 pm
Since 1993, I have lived in the 1100 block of East Jefferson Street and have watched the neighborhoods between Dodge and Evans streets decline. Much of that three-block area has turned from single family homes to rental apartments and duplexes with a few apartment buildings. I call this “student sprawl.”
I am not anti-student, nor anti-builder, but recently I have become more anti-developer. Longtime Iowa City residents resent building student housing in our neighborhoods. Many of us like the central business area the way it is. It is time for city officials to listen to residents and approve the proposed amendments to Title 14 zoning matters.
