Stand Your Ground law not necessary

To the editor:
Having grown up around guns and having brothers who are avid hunters, I am not against gun ownership. The issue I have with the National Rifle Association supporters is that they seem to want no regulation on gun sales. They also are lobbying the Iowa Legislature to pass a Stand Your Ground law.
The time has come for common sense regarding guns. No mentally unstable person should be able to legally own a gun. No one convicted of a felony or domestic abuse should have one, either. I know they can still be obtained illegally. Does that make it right to allow it under the law? One could say the same thing for buying heroin.
Iowa does not need Stand Your Ground nor do we need open carry to be legalized. No one needs to pack a sidearm to go to Home Depot. We have laws that allow you to defend your life if it is threatened. They do not, however, allow you to shoot out of your own paranoia.
We advocates of common sense gun regulations are not advocating taking away the 2nd Amendment, despite what the NRA and its supporters would have you believe.
