Spend gas tax on repairing roads

To the editor:
I was discouraged to read the Feb. 28 Gazette article ('Many have dibs on spending gas tax”) which asked our government officials where the new 10 cent gas tax should be spent.
All but one was quoted wanting to spend the money on new projects, road expansions, etc. This tax was presented to Iowans as a way to repair our embarrassingly poor existing roads, not to expand the road system that we are having trouble maintaining.
That was the reason I and many other citizens supported it. Misrepresentations in situations like this are what lead to the mistrust of government so pervasive in our society.
Come on State of Iowa, make sure the money from this tax goes to the purpose of repairing roads as promised.
