Solar users should help pay for grid

State Rep. Gary Carlson, R-Muscatine, recently proposed a bill, House Study Bill 185, through the Commerce Committee that will make our solar energy policy fair and efficient. Some Iowans may be wondering what that will mean for them, so I want to clear the air.
Carlson's bill brings fairness to solar and helps all energy consumers.
While I don't own a solar panel, I support those who do. But, there is an issue we must fix, which is what Carlson's bill addresses. Currently, all Iowans cover some of the costs for those who have solar panels. Currently, solar owners don't pay for their use of the power grid. That shifts the cost to other customers, like me, who do not have solar.
We can support modern solar energy without shifting cost along the way. I support Carlson's leadership on this issue and look forward to having more solar in Iowa that is fair to all Iowans.
