Social Security only option for some

To the editor:
Now that the Republicans control the Senate, they have been inviting people to speak. Their latest speaker was former Michigan Gov. John Engler, a member of the Business Roundtable, who talked about the need to cut taxes for big corporations and the way to do that was by cutting Social Security and Medicare.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone was able to retire with a 401K or a pension? With the state of the economy and the decline of the middle class, I fear a lot of people will only have their Social Security.
Bernie Sanders is introducing a bill to save Social Security and increase benefits by $65 a month. As Social Security is now it will be solvent for another 18 years and his plan would make it solvent for another 45 years. It takes a lot of guts for someone who will retire on $88,000 a month to want to cut benefits for someone who will average $1,000 a month. We still have President Barack Obama to veto any bill that would do this, but part of their plan is to take the presidency in 2016. If they control the House, Senate and presidency, these things will happen. They can fix it if they choose to, but their concern is the big corporations. Now our senators, both Republicans, will refuse to raise taxes, but they need to know how wefeel. Tell them what you expect and then vote.
