Social Security is not adding to federal deficit
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 24, 2011 10:02 am
Did you know that Social Security does not add - and never has added - a single penny to the federal deficit? House Majority Leader Eric Cantor doesn't seem to. He is still insisting that Social Security needs to be cut to reduce the deficit.
The truth is that Social Security is paid for through the payroll tax. At this very moment, the payroll tax raises more money than Social Security pays out. Current projections indicate that this tax will continue to fully support Social Security for at least the next two decades.
So why do we keep hearing that Social Security needs to be cut? Rep. Cantor and many others who parrot this falsehood are either ignorant, misinformed or have an ulterior motive.
