Snow-day decisions all about children’s safety

Concerning the number of snow days for school children in Cedar Rapids, I think it is only fair to say that the school officials who decide do so for the safety of all children. They likely hear about their decision no matter which way they go, so this decision is not one made lightly. They must take into consideration the safety issue.
I live in the country and see the conditions that roads are in during the early morning hours when bus drivers are picking up the children. I admire these people for the terrific job they do every single day.
The Feb. 12 letter writer commented on how Madison, Wis., does not have as many snow days. True, but it is also true that they go to school until June 11. It might weigh heavily on them to not dismiss school knowing that the school year might last most of June if they did take too many snow days. We also don't know how many children in the Madison school districts miss school unable to get there due to the snow, particularly those who live in the country.
Our school authorities make decisions with only the best interests of the children in mind, and we should be thankful.
