SNAP does not deserve political theatre

I was disheartened to read my senator’s recent email criticizing the use of SNAP benefits for occasional fast food purchases. The message relied on mockery and gimmicks rather than thoughtful policy and revealed a troubling fixation on policing the eating habits of people struggling to afford food.
SNAP recipients are families, seniors, people with disabilities, and working Iowans trying to survive rising costs and limited access to healthy food. They deserve dignity, not moral judgment. Fast food is often the most accessible option for individuals with limited transportation, unpredictable work schedules, or lack of reliable kitchen facilities. Most of us rely on convenience meals at times. Expecting low income individuals to meet a higher standard than everyone else is both unrealistic and unfair.
More concerning is the misplaced priority. While public education is being dismantled, global conflicts escalate, and corporate influence continues to distort our political system, our senator has chosen to focus on whether someone on food assistance eats a hamburger. This is not serious leadership. It is distraction.
If the true goal is better nutrition, solutions should center on expanding access to affordable healthy food, supporting local grocery options, and strengthening community food systems, not shaming people for how they manage scarce resources.
Iowans deserve representatives who lead with compassion, evidence, and a focus on the real challenges facing our state.
