Single-track trails boost local economy

The piece by Michelle Barker (“Cheap, dirty and fun,” Feb. 26) did an excellent job describing the hidden gem on the southwest side that is Beverly Park.
While very inconspicuous from any direction, just a few hundred feet from Highway 30, Beverly Park is an asset for our community. I would encourage Cedar Rapids and Linn County to support the development of similar parks in this area. Single-track trails are not only enjoyable to the hobbyists who use them; they provide a substantial economic boost to the area.
The typical user arrives at the park using locally purchased gas, with their locally purchased bike, snowshoes or hiking boots. They eat snacks and drink beverages of choice bought on the way to the park, and visit a local restaurant afterward. The good times they enjoy motivate them to purchase additional gear, replace worn parts, and buy the next big upgrade for their bike, all from the local shop.
They had such a good time that they talk their friend into trying their hobby. Their friend than buys locally purchased equipment, food, drinks and gas in order to share the experience.
Trails such as Beverly Park bring money into the community and support local business. Thank you, Linn Area Mountain Bike Association (LAMBA), for your contribution to our economy. Here is one citizen who is calling for the development of additional single-track in the Linn County area to grow off the success of Beverly Park!
