Silent on tuition costs in loan talks

A recent letter, “Lasting solution for loan rates needed,” was written by 12 student body presidents from Iowa colleges. The first words of the letter were “Skyrocketing tuition costs.” The rest of the letter was about student loan rates. Like our elected officials in Washington, the writers focused not on the tuition increases, but on the rates for loans used to cover the costs. Almost 50 years ago I asked the dean of men at an Eastern Iowa college why the tuition had increased at twice the rate of inflation. His answer: “Don't worry, you can get a cheap student loan.” That is still the answer. The question of why costs keep increasing is ignored. Why?
