This past week was Teacher Appreciation Week. This prompted me to write this letter. As a retired educator, I understand the importance of showing appreciation for our educators and education professionals not just during this week, but year-round. Teachers across our state are pouring their hearts and souls into their classrooms every day, shaping the minds and futures of our next generation.
Every student, regardless of background, deserves educators who are caring, committed and equipped with the resources needed to ensure their success. Yet, for all too long, our teachers have faced inadequate public school funding and attacks from parents and communities as they work diligently to do their jobs. Politically-motivated attacks have exacerbated the challenges facing our teachers.
While thanks are welcome and appreciated, we must back up our appreciation with action. We need to be vocal in supporting educators and those who are working to improve conditions that allow for maximum learning. Unfortunately, there are some lawmakers who have inserted themselves into our classrooms and often undermine the important work of our teachers. Our hardworking educators deserve better Iowa’s students need teachers who can help them reach their potential. Honor these educators beyond this week with sustained action and advocacy throughout the year. Pay attention to which lawmakers vote for maximum support for teachers, strong AEA services and adequate funding for schools when you vote in November.
