Show support for sheltered workshops

The move to close sheltered workshops for the disabled is taking away an opportunity for those who don't fit the 'community employment” mold.
I have worked with people with disabilities for more than 30 years through Linn County, first with the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities-supported community living program and now at Options.
I have seen much movement toward client choice, which has been positive. Now, part of that 'choice” is being taken away. I love that those who are able will have more of an opportunity to work in the community and be integrated, but we can't take away the opportunity and choices for those who can't.
Let's give those who don't fit into the 'community employment” mold the choice to continue to have the opportunity to thrive where they can feel they belong and not take away their feeling of pride and accomplishment of earning their own money.
If legislators could see the smiles on their faces when they see their friends and get that paycheck, they may understand.
If sheltered workshops are closed, these individuals will possibly be at home or a day program where they no longer will have that pride of earning that paycheck.
Please stand up for those who can't. The Linn County Board of Supervisors will meet with family members and anyone who wishes to get involved at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Linn County Community Services Building, 1240 26th Ave. Ct. SW.
