Shoddy crosswalks compel jaywalking

On Oct. 29, my wife dropped me off at the College of Hairstyling, 1531 First Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, so I could get a haircut. I told her when I was done, I'd walk over to Hy-Vee for coffee until she could pick me up. It wasn't raining at the time I walked to Hy-Vee, but the sidewalk on the southeast side of First Avenue had standing water shoe top deep in several places.
At the crosswalk by Hy-Vee, the approach is way too deep and it sets full of water. I don't blame people for jaywalking there - who wants to ruin their shoes? I think if our city council members had to walk that block, they'd get it fixed or at least spend some money on a study.
