Sheriff’s letters lead to mistrust of his abilities

I was disgusted to see Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek writing chain letters to every newspaper in the area complaining about how a special election was a waste of money caused by those “tax-and-spend” Republicans.
Sheriff, your only job is to enforce the laws, not to pick and choose what laws you want to enforce based on your political affiliation. Just because a group of people legally petitioned for a special election, it is not your duty to berate them or bully them using your position. This sets bad precedence and makes your officers question your ethical and legal duties. In addition, it makes people distrust law enforcement.
People won't vote for a new jail if they don't trust your judgment.
An elected sheriff complaining about the cost of an election is sadly ironic as well. You do not create the laws. If you believe it is more important to play dirty politics than enforcing the law, then we will find a different sheriff to fulfill this duty.
And “those Republicans” in Johnson County had nothing to do with the explosion of new taxes or the insane spending spree the Johnson County Democratic machine has enjoyed over the past few years. You have your own party to blame for that.
