Shared costs, matching funds are benefits

Cedar Rapids needs flood protection for both sides of the river if we are going to become the city we want to be. The extension of the local-option sales tax is the best way to make this happen.
Rather than try to fund it with property taxes - all of which would come from Cedar Rapids residents - it allows people who like to come to Cedar Rapids for entertainment and shopping help us pay for the protection our city needs. This makes sense because the protection benefits all of us.
The extension also will undoubtedly bring in matching funds from the state and federal governments. This also helps spread the cost of our protection around, so that we don't carry the burden alone.
