Shameful use of U.S. flag in Postville signs
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Dec. 1, 2009 11:12 pm
Regarding the desecration of the United States flag by the Jews in Postville (for using an image of the flag on posters calling for support of former Agriprocessors Manager Sholom Rubashkin):
It's not only unacceptable, it's against the code of the State of Iowa to deface the American flag. It goes against everything Iowans and veterans in particular stand for.
The American flag is not to be used as a banner or a backdrop for a cause. It is our symbol of a free country and above any individual use, especially something like this, where a person convicted of a criminal act is attempting to shield or wrap himself in it.
Veterans do this only at military funerals, when the coffin is draped with an American Flag. To hide or attempt to create sympathy for a person by using the symbol as the American flag will only backfire and create more dislike and distrust of him.
We want the signs removed and destroyed and an apology made to all of Postville and their veterans.
