Set number of school days not necessary

The concern over schools making up snow days is indicative of the mess that arises when government interjects itself where it does not belong. To have the state dictate an ironclad length for the school year serves only to allow politicians to claim piously a great commitment to education. A good, basic education does not require a magic number of days or hours spent in school.
If schools started on the first weekday after Sept. 1, allowed for holiday breaks and in-service as each saw fit, and went as many days as weather or other factors allowed until the last weekday in May, there would be ample opportunity for as much education as each student would choose to obtain.
