Senior drivers unfairly stigmatized
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jun. 12, 2010 12:57 am
A recent disgruntled letter writer (Ann Taylor, June 1) came down hard on senior drivers, of which she is one. She cited “problem seniors” who are causing too many accidents and should not be driving. Also pulling out in front of you and then slowing down to 5 or 10 mph below the speed limit and coming onto the interstate too slow and not using “common sense.”
With an aging population, it would not be wise to get seniors off the road. They purchase a lot of new cars, of which few are repossessed. They go on vacations (drive) and go to many shopping centers and civic functions, which all help the economy.
An accident is never considered a big deal unless it involves a senior.
Coming onto the interstate too slow when everyone else is speeding and with no guarantee they will move over and you are running out of road happens all the time. As does pulling out in front of you and then slowing down 5 or 10 miles below the speed limit. So what? As long as they are driving the minimum speed.
If “common sense” had anything to do with driving, we would still be at 55 mph.
