Send thoughts and prayers to the southern border

I recently read the Pentagon is sending more troops to the southern border to help with the supposed 'crisis” going on there. Why not just send thoughts and prayers instead?
That seems to be the general consensus from politicians every time there's another school shooting. If it is good enough for mass shootings, why not the border?
