Senate should have allowed Lake Macbride vote
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Mar. 31, 2011 12:31 pm
It was disheartening to read Orlan Love's March 18 article, stating that the chairman of the Senate Natural Resources Committee refused to allow the Lake Macbride measure to be discussed in committee, let alone allowing it to be voted on by the Iowa Senate. He said he did it in deference to his Iowa City colleague.
The majority of the recent opinion letters in The Gazette have been from individuals who have used the lake for years, supported the measure (to allow larger motors with no-wake restriction) and reside outside of the Solon/Iowa City area.
The House voted and approved the measure and the Senate should have allowed the vote, too. Favoring the few over the many and denying the chance for representatives of areas outside of Solon and Iowa City to represent their constituents is just plain wrong.
