Seek alternatives to closing Jones Golf Course

Here we go again with talk of closing Jones Golf Course because of flooding and fiscal concerns.

That side of the city needs Jones; golfers spend money in local restaurants and bars.

What is needed is a good par-3 course - a 6,000-yard course is too long for most juniors and seniors. Close the flooded back nine and create a top-rate 18-hole par-3/executive course. This gives parents a place to teach and play with junior golfers (needed to grow the game) instead of slowing play at other courses. Parent/junior leagues could be established, or shuttle service for those in senior housing developments. Basically: Grow the game.

Miniature golf (putt-putt) could be put in. That would draw people in.

If Jones is closed for fiscal reasons, why not sell off Twin Pines as well? That land has to be of great value to the city. Take the profits from the sell and build a new 18-hole Links-style course with a par-3/executive course, mini-golf course and a club house that could host receptions (class reunions, weddings, etc.).

Where would this golf facility be built? What happened to the land Jerry Tuma donated to be used for a golf course ... soccer anyone? Is land still available at the Tuma estate for this? The city is growing in that direction.

Lastly, maybe an organization dedicated to marketing and growing the sport needs to take over so the city can get out of the golf business.
