Second Amendment is outdated

To the editor:
Regarding the March 31 letter 'Second Amendment is under attack”:
This outdated amendment was put in place for a part-time militia (Founding Fathers feared large standing army becoming corrupt like England's). During Shay's rebellion the U.S. had no army to restore order. The compromise was a part-time militia called up by U.S. Senate approval when needed and disbanded during peacetime. The right to hunt, etc., has been everyone's right in the U.S. and no sense in addressing it then or now.
The last time the Second Amendment was needed was the War of 1812 (outdated? Yes!). Guns had to be locked away or disassembled (child protection) when not in use. In 2004, a Supreme Court ruling said a person can't protect themselves if they cannot grab their gun in a hurry. Six of nine justices refused to take up the case. Three of the six wanted framers intentions before ruling (this wasn't done). Of the three remaining two ruled in favor and one opposed. Antonin Scalia wrote up the ruling, saying in part criminals and mentally ill can't possess weapons. Is this enforceable? I think not.
In closing, do you think the ruling was correct? I don't. Two votes for, one against, and six not getting involved.
