School intersection traffic unacceptable
The Gazette Opinion Staff

I was at the intersection of Sixth Street SW and 76th on Sept. 30. This accident fortunately involved no children and no injuries. However, it easily could have been much worse with a busload of kids and easily could have surpassed the limits of liability held by the school's insurance.
The traffic during schools hours on this two-lane road is unacceptable. Not only was this accident highly probable, without redirecting the bus traffic the chances of it happening again approach inevitable.
I spoke with Dick Whitehead, College Community superintendent, and he told me there was no issue. The district is well-funded but shortsighted. Do we really need a worse accident before we address an eminent domain initiative or another alternative?
I believe we got lucky. Can we risk this configuration or attitude in the future? We can do better.
