Same-sex marriage better than civil unions
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 11, 2011 8:12 am
Some politicians believe that civil unions are an adequate compromise on the same-sex marriage issue. But why should gay and lesbian Iowans not be allowed the right of marriage, something that is understood by all Iowans?
Civil unions fail to provide the full meaning and legal rights of marriage. In states like New Jersey and Connecticut, where civil unions have been tried, gays are still subject to discrimination.
Additionally, religious institutions still have the prerogative to deny the rite of marriage to anyone they see fit. The right to marry simply guarantees the legal recognition of gay and lesbian couples.
