Safety devices should remain in local hands

Just wanted to add a “thank you” for the Dec. 22 editorial “Keep the wheels rolling” regarding the tactics of the Department of Transportation.
Director Paul Trombino appears to be establishing a powerful (new) bureaucracy with his proposals to complicate the traffic safety efforts of communities across the state. Traffic camera placement and control must be in the hands of local police and safety officials.
Retired Cedar Rapids Police Officer Jerry Chilton and I have called and written local legislators asking them to question the judgment of the DOT in this matter.
Control of traffic on Interstate 380 is the best answer to how safety results when cameras are used in Cedar Rapids. We need to keep the safety devices in local hands. Period.
