Saddler’s vision helped save many lives

Jul. 6, 2010 12:01 am
John Saddler was an unassuming man, but a titan of innovation whose insight benefited the whole community. He saw an opportunity to help people by creating a medical air ambulance program and a safer Cedar Rapids. Working with the county Civil Defense and Mayor Don Canney, he was able to procure surplus military helicopters for the police department, and multiple Bell Huey helicopters for an air ambulance service.
John created an effective helicopter flight program for the Cedar Rapids Police Department, and in April 1979, John Saddler's second vision came to fruition when he transported the first critical patient, an injured child, in an air ambulance. Thousands of people can credit this man for their lives today.
He was a true visionary, aviator, pilot, and friend. He'll be missed by those who loved him and continue to carry on his dream.
My mentor and hero, John Saddler.
