Rural communities need broadband Internet

Access to the next generation of communications technology is essential to all Americans - including those in rural communities like mine in Iowa. But these communities often struggle to get reliable, consistent access. Currently, about one-third of rural American households do not have access to broadband Internet.
Last week, I went to Washington, D.C., to meet with Sens. Chuck Grassley and Tom Harkin and Reps. Tom Latham and Dave Loebsack to encourage them to support policies promoting increased access to high-speed wireless broadband, to strengthen and grow rural communities across Iowa.
Nowadays, broadband is a critical tool for success. It is crucial for education and business, and equally so for providing the latest news and information. I run a social media consulting firm, Catchfire Media, and I can attest to the benefits that broadband would bring entrepreneurs in Iowa. Increased access will help communities attract businesses and preserve rural populations by offering more options to younger generations. I hope Iowa's elected representatives support expanded access to this tool.
