Every once in awhile a citizen emerges to run for public office, bringing an extraordinary mix of education, experience, character and leadership qualities. It has been a pleasure for me to know such a person, Col. Ken Rizer (Ret.), Republican candidate for Iowa House, representing District 68.
Rizer, distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, F-16 fighter pilot and decorated mission commander in the Iraq conflict, recently completed a 25-year career of exemplary military service. His dedication to leadership and administration through a progression of responsibilities culminated in a demanding role, commander of Joint Base Andrews, home of Air Force One. Now a civilian, he devotes himself to service as a senior executive in a non-profit organization, assisting military veterans and people with disabilities.
At the recent candidate forum conducted by the League of Women Voters of Linn County, I was impressed by Rizer's poise under pressure, adroitly and expertly fielding questions by illustrating with a treasure of relevant administrative experiences.
Despite his attainments, he is a personable gentlemen, endowed with humility, sincerity, reverence, respect for people with diverse views, and a passion for service to America and Americans. This is a rare opportunity to send an exceptionally talented citizen to Des Moines.
