Reynolds, Vernon should debate

I was so impressed with The Gazette's Sept. 24 editorial 'Lt. Gov. role important, needs debate” questioning the lack of any debates being scheduled for the lieutenant gubernatorial candidates. On television spots, Gov. Terry Branstad's running mate, Kim Reynolds, is usually shown standing beside or behind the governor. She is an attractive woman, but I have yet to hear her speak and/or articulate her positions or views on anything. In contrast, Monica Vernon has been very clear about her abilities and positions and is so well prepared to be the governor, should that be necessary. Why not let the voters of Iowa see what their option would be if that situation arose and compare the two candidates and their qualifications to run this great state?
I think that we, as educated voters, should insist on a debate between these two. Why isn't that happening? Does Branstad have that much control that he can keep us in the dark about his running mate's qualifications to become the one who is a heartbeat away from becoming governor, or is it that he has no confidence in her to be able to compete with her opponent?
