Resolution 2022: Invest government dollars in those who need it most

Spending must prioritize people with the most need. Uplifting those who are struggling benefits the whole community. Ensuring functional services for low-income people allows folks to work and support themselves and their families, contributing to the local economy, a functioning community, public health and education. Johnson County’s allocation of direct stimulus to essential but excluded workers is an example.
In 2022, the Corridor Community Action Network (CCAN) will support: Affordable housing and child care — that accurately accounts for wage-workers and the unemployed’s setbacks — are paramount, especially in Iowa City. Cedar Rapids should fund a match to the PATCH program for those who struggle to pay rent and can’t financially purchase a home.
Public transit defines a city. More funding should go to this service that integrates communities. Linn County’s transit is lacking and silos people and neighborhoods. Car culture is removed from how integral public transit is, how far below a functional standard it is, especially at non-privileged (8 to 5) work hours.
Food security still needs improvement. Sustainable building that actively reduces if not offsets climate change should take priority over quick development projects.
We need COVID vaccination outreach and mask-wearing efforts for low-income people and immigrants to counter state limitations. We need some of those infrastructure dollars, particularly for COVID safety in schools and for teachers recently abused by the state’s pandemic response.
In 2022, CCAN will continue to amplify, support and fight for initiatives that promote community equity and quality of life by funding these needs.
