United Way of East Central Iowa (UWECI) devoted 2021 to completing a Community Impact Assessment. We delved into data, collaborated to complete a survey and co-hosted focus groups to ensure we heard many voices in our community. The findings were unanimous: housing, child care, safety net services and access to health care are our community’s top concerns.
We know housing is an outcome that predicts stability and success. Iowans need affordable and safe housing in order to thrive. Many factors contribute to barriers to safe and affordable housing, creating economic mobility while sustaining a safety net for families is a pathway to get to achieve this outcome.
The early years of a child’s life set the tone for future success in education, well-being and economic opportunity and stability. Focusing on early childhood success creates a pathway for children to be successful as children, adolescents and adults. Having access to health care is a barrier to overcome for our community’s well-being, UWECI’s Women United, group is committed to women’s health in our community and is resolved to spend 2022 advocating, volunteering and giving for this cause.
The journey of this last year is the spirit in which we are directing our efforts for 2022. Because we heard a unified voice about what challenges our community face, we resolve to be part of a unified solution with our community partners. This assessment will guide strategic decisions as UWECI works to foster a community where everyone can thrive: one that is sustainable, safe, and equitable.
