Republicans hypocritical on cameras, marriage
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 12, 2011 10:09 am
In a Feb. 4 article (“Senators: Ban traffic cameras”), legislator Steve Kettering from Lake View referred to traffic cameras as a form of “big brother” and he and some other Republican legislators want to remove them.
Don't these Republicans have anything better to do? As a driver and pedestrian, I have seen individuals with no regard for the safety or well-being of others disobeying speeding signs and running red lights. Such people deserve to pay for lousy driving habits that put others at risk.
What boggles the mind is that Republicans find the cameras evidence of “big brother” but feel no reluctance to pass legislation that discriminates against their fellow Iowans who fall in love and want to marry someone of the same gender. If a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages isn't an example of a big-brother social agenda, I don't know what is.
It confounds me how they can justify their outrageous hypocrisy.
