Reopen discussion to protect mountain lions
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Dec. 28, 2009 11:47 pm
The recent killing of a lone mountain lion in Iowa County needs to be addressed and questioned. Mountain lions are solitary, shy animals that shun human activity and are predators of deer. Mountain lions are not protected or managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The action of the individual was not illegal but one must question killing a magnificent animal, with no food value, sitting in a tree.
Reopen the topic of designating mountain lions and black bears as protected wildlife in Iowa. Write to your legislator today, asking to have the Iowa Code changed. For an enlightened view of the mountain lions, see www.mountainlion.org
