Removing mayor next step after LOST defeat
The Gazette Opinion Staff
May. 6, 2011 10:33 am
Thank you to all who voted no on the local-option sales tax on May 3. Despite heavy special interest funding, the 20-year tax was defeated.
What is the plan now, Mr. Mayor? We all know our property taxes will continue to rise, as you continue to squeeze the life blood out of this community. You have approved exorbitant projects such as the city going into the hotel business, the former Sinclair and Iowa Steel sites, extra expenses for the new medical area and an amphitheater. In the meantime, the City Council has let our streets deteriorate to where you thought you could get them fixed up by using 40 percent of LOST. Another 10 percent was to go to property tax relief (toss us all a bone).
You have not advertised the fact that no federal funds have been committed to either side of the river, and due to federal funding cuts, it is possible that none ever will be. The next vote concerning you should be your removal from office. Hopefully we can get a mayor who is sensitive to the real needs of people.
And to Zach Johnson, who was promoting this tax, stick to golf. Your game could use some improvement.
