Reject anti-immigration rhetoric

The anti-immigrant sentiment that is sweeping this nation is extremely disturbing. Taken for granted are the facts that no one wants to allow terrorists free reign in our country and that the world has changed significantly since the birth of our country. But how are we losing sight that our nation was founded (and made great) by immigrants.

Many Americans seem to accept that the best way to 'protect” us from the negatives is to broadly limit all immigration. When my grandfathers passed through Ellis Island in the early 1900s they didn't speak English, had extremely limited resources and no base to build from. They worked hard, had families, bought property and each achieved the American dream. Yet today we are actively trying to close the door on that dream.

We have an aging population that is ignoring the benefits of growing our immigrant population. Immigrants will take the jobs that Americans don't seem to want. They will contribute to the tax base, they will help offset the falling birthrate, their consumption will help to stimulate the economy, their children will become productive members of society and their customs and beliefs will bring diversity to our nation.

It's time we finally reject the rhetoric and accept the rich heritage and tradition that built this nation.
