Reciting party lines, labels unproductive

It was refreshing to have discussions with my friends about the candidates for Cedar Rapids mayor and City Council and not immediately fall into entrenched positions according to our party affiliations.
Our discussions did not move to the low ground by painting the candidates with “liberal,” “conservative,” “socialist,” “left wing” or “right wing” labels. How unproductive our political discussions (including letters to the editor) often are when we recite party lines and substitute these labels for reasoned discussion.
