Reader finds many eagles in Iowa City

The gentleman who wrote a column recently on going to Davenport to the locks to see eagles and only finding a few too far away to get a good picture, should have been in Iowa City/Coralville on Jan 21. Riding down First Ave in Coralville past the power dam and the river below, I counted over at least 26 in the trees and flying while our son was reporting more than a dozen circling the power plant below the Burlington St bridge in Iowa City. Later, we drove along the same route and I counted over 50 in trees and flying with another 45+ along the river on the Coralville strip and turning onto Shore Dr. Another 30 were flying over the river and sitting in the trees along Riverside Drive.

When growing up on a farm north of Guttenberg in the 1940s and 50s, we saw about 4 total by the time I left at the age of 17, besides no turkeys or coyotes and very few deer. But just think how overrun we would be if the turkey was our national bird, and we had to put an eagle on our Thanksgiving dinner table.
