Raising a glass to Kurt Michael Friese
Wendy Wasserman and Genie Gratto

Many Iowans have a story of sharing a pint, a glass, or a meal with Kurt Michael Friese - always paired with passionate conversation. But news of Kurt's sudden death touched many of us beyond Johnson County.
We both were Iowa City newcomers over a decade ago when Kurt invited us to his table, both figuratively and literally. He sensed a shared belief in local food and community, and unleashed his vision with us. With his editorial eye and commitment, Edible Iowa River Valley took root. What was a proud labor of love for Kurt, Kim and every one of the magazine's writers and photographers, went on to educate readers for years.
Although both of us have since followed paths leading us away from Iowa City, Kurt kept an eye on us as allies, advocates and partners. Johnson County's loss will be felt from coast to coast.
