Put the emphasis on people in Constitution
N/A
Nov. 12, 2010 3:28 pm
An Oct. 31 article by Trish Mehaffey was about the pros and cons of an Iowa constitutional convention. The article also provided a description of the most salient difference between the liberal and conservative ideology.
One quote: “The fear is that people would adopt something without fully understanding it. How could you educate voters, especially if there are a number of amendments?”
The other quote said a constitutional convention would “give people a route to go around the legislators.”
As a common citizen, I interpret the first quote to say that people, like you and me, are stupid and can't be allowed to choose our own direction.
I interpret the second to say that people are in charge of the Constitution, not the lawyers or legislators, and that the people have the absolute right to demand to what extent they are governed.
The U.S. Constitution starts with “We the people.” Should Iowa ignore this and accept in its place “We the government”? People, look at the Iowa Constitution Article 1, Sections 1 and 2
